Smoking Cessation Advice

Both our nurses are trained Smoking Cessation Counsellors. They will work on a one-to-one basis with people who have had a variety of different needs, including disabilities and mental health problems. They are fully trained in all aspects of smoking cessation work, which includes the knowledge of smoking related illnesses, medications which help people stop smoking, the psychological and behavioural aspects of smoking addiction, and helping individuals to maintain their motivation.

You will be seen regularly for the first three months, with the aim of helping you to prepare and then stay motivated during the first few weeks. Having someone to report to each week can make a huge difference, and smokers who attend clinics regularly have been shown statistically to be four more times successful than if they try to give up smoking on their own. Many of the patients who use the service say that they would not have succeeded if they had not had someone to come and report to regularly.

Medications on offer include various forms of nicotine replacement therapy and zyban, which are available on prescription for people who attend the clinic. These products reduce or remove the withdrawal symptoms and cravings which people usually experience when they stop smoking, and using them correctly doubles the chance of giving up smoking permanently.

If you wish to give up smoking, please make a double appointment to see one of the nurses.
