When something gets into your eye you will usually be aware of it immediately.  A feeling of ‘something in the eye’ which develops slowly is more likely to be an allergy or an infection (see the self help section on conjunctivitis)

Foreign bodies in the eye can usually be rinsed out using plain warm water.

Contact the doctor when the surgery is open if:

  • the eye still feels or looks sore after several days

Contact the surgery straight away if:

  • you can see the foreign body but have been unable to remove it

  • despite removing it the eye remains painful

  • vision is affected beyond simple blurring caused by watering

  • the incident involved something travelling at speed which may have penetrated the eye or involved a direct blow to the eye.
